Russian Hill Townhouse
For a longtime Russian Hill resident and owner of one of the North Beach’s iconic bars, we reimagined a dark, narrow kitchen and adjoining dining room as one open, light-filled space with views toward the Bay. Removing the dividing wall transformed the way the rooms function and brought a fresh sense of openness to the home.
Custom cerused-oak cabinetry and a new island establish a warm, timeless foundation, complemented by luminous quartzite countertops and an unexpected panel of ivory crocodile-embossed leather at the island. Against this quiet, neutral palette, the client’s favorite color, green, brings the room to life on the walls and velvet barstools. Vintage Palwa pendants and sconces add a jewel-like quality, while contemporary plumbing and a mix of brass and stainless steel keep the room crisp and current.
The custom white marble mosaic backsplash was inspired by a textile pattern by Josef Hoffmann. Its geometric motif, with a subtle resemblance to rows of Martini glasses, adds a playful nod to the client’s connection to San Francisco’s legendary bar culture.
The result is a kitchen that feels light, sophisticated and highly personal, rooted in classic materials but distinctly contemporary.
